Meet Dr. Suzanne Freeman

Suzanne (@SuzanneKFreeman) is an Education Consultant. She has over 31 years of service in public education as a teacher, principal and superintendent. She served as superintendent for over 15 years of three different districts, two of which were start-up school districts. In 2009 Suzanne was Alabama Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year.

Suzanne speaks nationally and facilitates professional learning on such topics as learner-centered schools, student engagement, community engagement, school transformation, creating a culture of learning, innovation, effective professional learning, leadership, school board governance, and other education topics. Suzanne works part-time Criterion K-12 Consulting, as well as consults independently with schools, school systems, cities, associations, and universities.

Suzanne was the 2010 recipient of the Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award from the Alabama Department of Education. In addition, she served as co-chair of A+ Education Partnership Council, has served as a board member, served as district president, and president of School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA), is a former member of Superintendents’ Leadership Network with the Center for Leadership and School Reform, served on the Board of Directors for Alabama Partnership for Children and was a member of Auburn University’s National Advisory Council for the College of Education. She also serves as a member of Education Reimagined’s Progressions Team. This team visits innovative schools throughout the country and designs tools and protocols to assess progress and advance learner-centered education.

Suzanne earned her bachelor’s degree from Asbury College and her master’s degree and Ph.D. from Auburn University. Suzanne also manages her DIY blog: LifeWithNealAndSuz.com.

She and her husband Neal live on Logan Martin Lake in Talladega, Alabama. Neal is a real estate appraiser. They have two adult children and a son-in-law. Their son Ryan is an artist and co-owns his own business. Their daughter Emmy is a registered nurse and their son-in-law Keith is a teacher and coach. They spend their leisure time with their family, traveling, and enjoying the lake. They also manage their online business hangITstrips.com.
